Copenhagen will be the 'Capital of Sustainable Meetings'

COP15 has been certified as the world's first sustainable, international political summit. And the ambition now is to make Copenhagen the world leader within sustainable meetings.

The white book, Copenhagen Sustainable Meetings Protocol (CSMP), will cement Copenhagen's position as a globally leading sustainable meetings destination. And in February the white book will be presented to the UN by the Foreign Ministry, with the recommendation that future climate conferences and other international meetings be developed along the guidelines laid out in Copenhagen.

The white book will document how COP15 was organised and held based on sustainable principles, and was the first political, international summit ever certified thus according to an international standard. Behind CSMP is a consortium made up of the Foreign Ministry, VisitDenmark, Copenhagen Council, Novo Nordisk, the congress arranger MCI Copenhagen, and Wonderful Copenhagen. And, at Wonderful Copenhagen, following the certification of COP15, we are making even greater efforts to bring more meetings within the sustainability field - on, for example, the environment, climate and energy - to the capital. Steen Jakobsen, congress director at Wonderful Copenhagen, says:

– The fact that the Foreign Ministry decided that COP15 should be developed to a far greater level of sustainability than the UN required has worked as a catalyst for Copenhagen's meetings industry, which now offers a choice which is far greener than prior to COP15. We will go after congresses within sustainability, which will also increase interest in Denmark's abilities in this area even more.

Wonderful Copenhagen will continue to seek partnerships between a broad cross section of public and private sector players to further strengthen Denmark's opportunities to attract green congresses.

– COP15 will play a part in paving the way for even more green meetings and congresses in Copenhagen, comments Wonderful Copenhagen's managing director, Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, on the outcome of Denmark's hosting of COP15. He continues:

– We have secured a name for ourselves, and become known within an area which everyone recognizes the importance of.

Facts:

The white book is produced by consultancy firm MCI Sustainability Services, but a third party, the Dansk Standard Certificering has, during November and December, monitored COP15 according to the international standard BS8901. This standard is also the target for the Olympic Games in 2012 in London.
