Copenhagen City Shut Down By Bikes On Election Day

Vital parts of Copenhagen will be shut down for cars next week, starting today on the Danish general election day.

In four days Copenhagen will  host the World Road Race Championships 2011, which will be the biggest sports event ever held in the center of the capital. The election date was set in order to keep Copenhagen free of election chaos while the city hosts the Championship.

Copenhagen is the first capital ever to host this big event in the center of the city. From today the Copenhagen Municipality has announced a premature close of Copenhagen's busiest road, HC Andersens Boulevard, with more than 60,000 cars per day - and one of the main thoroughfares in the semi-divided city.

During the Time Trials, from Monday to Wednesday, 70 streets in Copenhagen will be blocked for car traffic. This is also seen as a test of the suggested toll road in Copenhagen which has been one of the big issues discussed in the election campaign.

The UCI World Road Races will be taking place from Friday to Sunday 25th, just north of Copenhagen in the scenic Rudersdal, where the traffic is smoother.

Car free city full of bike tourists

Copenhagen is expecting many spectators during the World Championship, including both locals and international tourists. Neighboring Norway is also expected to be strongly represented among the guests.

When the Road Race is over for the day, the bike loving Copenhageners will take advantage of the city closure to put on a big public party in the streets of their capital. For locals and the tourists there will be music, arts, food and parties in the streets, including several big free concerts in the city arranged by the team behind the famous Roskilde Festival.

Around the city, as well as in Rudersdal where the road races are taking place Thursday till Sunday, bike related activities such as ‘Pimp your own bike’,  bike theatre, water biking, Donate your bike to Africa, urban biking, BMX and the official Bike Parade etc. will be part of the street life.

The UCI Bike City Copenhagen

The UCI Road World Championships 2011 event is part of the Bike City Copenhagen project (BCC), which HRH Crown Prince Frederik is protector of. Copenhagen is the only city in the world that has been appointed Bike City by the UCI. Between 2008 and 2011 Copenhagen has hosted 6 major international cycling events.

Beyond the above event, the package includes among others the World BMX Championships 2011. Behind BCC stand strong partners such as the Danish Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark, The City of Copenhagen, the Municipality of Rudersdal, the Municipality of Ballerup, the Capital Region of Copenhagen and Wonderful Copenhagen.

The UCI Road World Championships will take place 19 – 25 September 2011 in Copenhagen/Rudersdal
