Scottish Event Campus partners with sustainable economy scheme

The Scottish Event Campus has announced its partnership with circular economy scheme, Circular Glasgow. Circular Glasgow, an initiative by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, aims to engage local organisations involved in the production of major city events, empowering them to improve the environmental legacy that they leave behind.

The initiative forms part of a wider agenda which originated in the Netherlands – Circle Economy. This social enterprise is dedicated to accelerating the practical implementation of the circular economy and introduced Circle Lab – a digital platform where organisations can connect.

The venue has made significant improvements to the sustainability practices across the campus in recent months and the partnership means that this can continue by sharing best practice with other organisations in Glasgow and beyond.

Peter Duthie, CEO at the SEC, said: “Its more important than ever before for venues and organisers to consider the impact that events have on the environment. Were often reminded about basic environmental awareness and recycling, but Circular Glasgow, and similar initiatives, encourage thinking outside the box and how to help the environment in different ways.

“We are delighted to partner with Circular Glasgow and are really looking forward to learning from other organisations and sharing our ideas, too.”

The SEC has already embarked on its own circular economy journey, by donating old carpet to charities for use in charity shop floors and for a local youth groups soundproof music studio. It is expected that activities like this will become more frequent with the access to the resources available through Circular Glasgow.

The partnership comes shortly after the campus retained the Gold Award for sustainability in line with the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------About Circular Glasgow

Circular Glasgow is a movement to inspire businesses of all sizes to innovate and become future-proof by adopting circular strategies. This current phase involves a programme of activity aimed at SMEs to provide support, tools and expert knowledge. It will connect companies across the city helping them to open up new revenue streams, increase competitive advantage and realise financial savings using a range of practical initiatives.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce hosts Circular Glasgow and is responsible for delivering this programme alongside key stakeholders: Zero Waste Scotland, Circle Economy (global market experts based in the Netherlands), Glasgow City Council and the University of Strathclyde.

Circular Glasgows vision: To create a sustainable economy and a city with an enviable quality of life. We aim to achieve this by inspiring businesses to assess and implement the circular economy in order to position Glasgow as a leading circular city.
