Participants from 16 countries gather for a major conference on Baltic Sea cooperation

On 24-27 October, UBC (Union of Baltic Cities) XIV General Conference takes place in Växjö. Some 300 participants from 16 countries will attend, mostly officials and politicians from the member cities, but there will also be representatives from the EU in Brussels and other actors who operate in the Baltic Sea region. 60 young people from different countries will also participate.

This year’s conference will focus on the increasingly important role of the cities in the development of sustainable communities, and has the theme Leadership for the future – cities as leaders for glocal, sustainable development.

During the conference, 60 young people will take part in UBC’s youth conference. The young people will come together to exchange ideas about future leadership of sustainable development, and they will be an important voice in the general conference where they will carry out assignments for UBC’s different working parties, as well as take part in panel discussions and workshops.

– We welcome the participants to Växjö and look forward to interesting lectures and networking with the aim of jointly finding practical ways forward. A special welcome to the 60 young people who are the leaders, entrepreneurs and decision makers of the future. In the days the participants are here, we of course want to show off our municipality and the work that is being done on sustainability, says Per Schöldberg (C), Deputy Mayor in Växjö.

 

Some highlights from the programme (seminars and workshops are held in Växjö konserthus / concert hall):

• 25 October 09.30 12.30: Workshop on different types of collaboration on the UN’s 17 goals for sustainable development - Agenda 2030.

• 24 October 15.30–18.00 + 26 October 14-16: Workshops on the importance of young people for future leadership.

• 24 October 15.30–18.00: The Municipality of Växjö is holding a workshop where specialist officials from Växjö municipality will share their experiences with colleagues from the region.

• 27 October 09.00-12.00 (participants meet outside Konserthuset/the concert hall):

• Study visits where participants will get the chance to experience the good example set by Växjö in different areas.

• Informative walk around Växjö Lake, where various experts highlight areas of interest in the environment and culture.

• Visit to Sandviksverket combined heat and power plant in Växjö.

• Visit to Växjö wood city – various wooden construction projects will be shown.
