Glasgow to Host the ICSEMIS Congress in 2012
In 2012 Glasgow will be hosting the International Convention on Science Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS), the world’s greatest sports science conference. The conference will be held the week prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
ICSEMIS is anticipated to attract 3,000 delegates from right across the globe and will be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre from July 19th - 24th 2012. Known as the Pre Olympic Convention, the ICSEMIS Convention will attract practitioners, academics and students with an interest in sports science. The theme of the Convention is “Sport . . . inspiring a learning legacy”, which supports the vision that ICSEMIS 2012 inspires and leaves a strong legacy in the field of sports science and education across its many disciplines.
The bid to host ICSEMIS 2012 was truly UK wide, and was presented by the Brunel 2012 Consortium. The Consortium members include:
• Brunel University (England), who coordinated the bid
• Liverpool John Moores University (England)
• University of Strathclyde (Scotland)
• University of Ulster (Northern Ireland)
• University of Cardiff (Wales)
• Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (Scotland)
• Congrex UK (Scotland and UK wide)
The Brunel Consortium bid last year in China, just before the Beijing Olympics, to host the 2012 Convention and won the bid for Glasgow. Recently representatives of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) met in Glasgow and signed the Host agreement. The ICC consists of: the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, the International Federation of Sports Medicine, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee.
Professor Celia Brackenridge, Chair of Youth Sport at Brunel, convenor of the Brunel ICSEMIS 2012 Consortium and Chair of ICSEMIS 2012 Local Organising Committee, said: “Winning the bid and hosting ICSEMIS 2012 is a great privilege and a considerable responsibility. The SECC will be an unbeatable venue for this prestigious event just before the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games inLondon. As a bid team we were always committed to spreading the benefits of the London Games to other parts of the UK and this is what we now plan to do. “
Caroline Mackenzie, Regional Director Business Development, is very pleased with this assignment: “Congrex UK went through a tendering process and are very delighted to be appointed as the partner of choice to be part of the Consortium. Congrex has given advice during the bidding process and will do everything that is necessary in the planning and delivery stages to make this a tremendously successful convention in 2012. “
